In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
What is In Vitro Fertilization?
It is a process of fertilizing eggs stimulated with the help of drugs and collected from the females under ultrasonography, by the sperm taken from the males in laboratory environment and getting pregnancy by transferring embryo(s) in the uterus.
1st Phase: First Meeting
In the first meeting with the couples who want children, the parents are told about the causes of infertility and information about the tests to be performed in order to make related diagnosis. The couples' sperm analysis tests that they had previously took, if any, the uterine film (If not, the uterus must be filmed), if they had previously been treated for infertility, the tests and reports related to the treatment process and all blood tests are requested. Thus, the history of the parents is learned. If the expectant mother has not had a smear test in the last year, smear test is performed. In the light of all this information, the cause of infertility is found and appropriate treatment is started.
2nd Phase: Treatment of stimulation of eggs
In the second stage of IVF treatment, the expectant mother comes to discuss with her doctor for the evaluation of her ovaries on the second or third day of her menstruation period. The physician who evaluates the ovaries of the expectant mother with the help of ultrasound may ask the hormone values according to the patient's condition. The physician evaluating the patient according to the results and starts the drug treatment for the development of eggs by stimulating the ovaries.
3rd Phase: Egg Retrieval Process
The egg developed by hormone drugs is retrieved from the uterus by injection, when it reaches the desired size and maturity under general anesthesia. Eggs that are retrieved vaginally from the uterus are fertilized by classical test-tube baby or microinjection method. In a classic test-tube baby method, a certain number of sperm is placed around the egg and one of the sperm is expected to fertilize the egg. In the microinjection method, the selected top quality and healthy sperm is injected by special methods.
4th Phase: Embryo Transfer
The egg and sperm taken to the laboratory for fertilization and embryo transfer are controlled and the embryo development is monitored. Good embryos are selected by the embryologist. It is determined by law that single embryo is applied to women under 35 years of age and double embryos are applied to those who are above 35. Selected quality embryo or embryos are placed into the uterus by a specialist physician with the help of a special catheter placed in the cervix. After the transfer of embryos without pain and without anesthesia, the expectant mother is rested between 45 minutes and 1 hour. After this period, the patient may return to normal life.
5th Phase: Test-Tube Baby Support Treatment
After embryo transfer, supportive drugs are given to the expectant mother to help the embryo to hold more tightly to the uterus.
